If you left school without A-Levels and want to go to university as an adult, the Access to Higher Education (HE) diploma is one of the most popular and effective routes available. Over 40,000 adults complete Access to HE courses in the UK each year, and the vast majority progress directly into university degrees.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what an Access diploma is, how to get one, what it costs, and how it leads to a university place.

What Is an Access to Higher Education Diploma?
An Access to HE diploma is a one-year qualification designed specifically for adults (19+) who want to go to university but do not have standard entry qualifications like A-Levels. It is equivalent to three A-Levels and is accepted by nearly all UK universities.
Access diplomas are available in a wide range of subjects:
- Access to Nursing and Midwifery
- Access to Social Work and Counselling
- Access to Law
- Access to Business and Management
- Access to Computing and IT
- Access to Psychology
- Access to Science (Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical)
- Access to Humanities and Social Sciences
- Access to Education and Teaching
Tip: Choose an Access diploma that matches the degree you want to study. For example, if you want to study nursing at university, take an Access to Nursing diploma. Universities look for relevant Access courses.
Entry Requirements
Access to HE courses are designed to be accessible. Most providers require:
- You must be 19 or older (some providers accept 18-year-olds in exceptional circumstances)
- GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or equivalent (some providers offer these alongside)
- No formal upper age limit — students in their 50s and 60s regularly complete Access courses
You do not need any previous A-Levels, BTECs, or other Level 3 qualifications. The whole point of Access is to provide that foundation.
How Long Does It Take?
Most Access to HE diplomas take one academic year (September to July) when studied full-time. Part-time options are also available and typically take two years. Classes are usually held at local colleges or adult education centres, often during the day, though evening and weekend options exist at some providers.
Funding: Advanced Learner Loan
Access to HE courses are funded through the Advanced Learner Loan. Here is what you need to know:
- The loan covers the full cost of your Access course — typically around £3,000 to £4,000
- You do not pay anything upfront
- You only start repaying once you are earning over a certain threshold
- If you go on to complete a university degree, the entire loan is written off
This last point is crucial. The government automatically cancels your Advanced Learner Loan once you finish a degree. In effect, the Access course becomes free.
Can I Get Other Financial Help?
Some colleges offer bursaries or hardship funds for Access students. You may also be eligible for:
- Learner Support — helps with childcare, transport, and equipment costs
- Discretionary Learner Support — for students facing financial hardship
- Universal Credit — some students can continue claiming while studying part-time
How Access Diplomas Lead to University
Once you complete your Access diploma, you can apply to university through UCAS or directly, depending on the institution. Access diplomas are graded using credits and graded units at distinction, merit, and pass levels. Universities typically ask for a certain number of credits at specific grades — similar to A-Level grade requirements.
For example, a university might require:
- 30 credits at distinction and 15 at merit for a competitive degree like Nursing or Law
- 15 credits at distinction and 30 at merit for a standard degree like Business or Social Sciences
- 45 credits at pass level for less competitive courses
Most universities publish their Access to HE grade requirements on their course pages, so you can plan ahead.
Tip: Contact university admissions before starting your Access course. Ask them exactly what grades they expect from Access students. This helps you target the right level of effort from day one.
Access to HE vs. Foundation Year
Both routes lead to university, but they work differently:
- Access to HE: One-year standalone qualification. You apply to university after completing it. Widely recognised across all UK universities. Costs around £3,000 (covered by Advanced Learner Loan).
- Foundation Year: Year 0 of a specific degree at a specific university. You progress automatically to Year 1 if you pass. Costs up to £9,250 in tuition fees (covered by Student Finance).
Access diplomas are generally better if you want to keep your options open. Foundation years are better if you know exactly which university and course you want.
How to Apply for an Access to HE Course
- Search for "Access to HE" courses at local colleges and adult education centres near you
- Compare course offerings — not every college offers every subject
- Check the entry requirements (usually GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4)
- Apply directly through the college website — no UCAS application needed
- Apply for the Advanced Learner Loan through the Student Finance England website
- Once accepted, start your course and work toward your university application
Can I Work While Studying an Access Course?
Yes. Most Access students work part-time alongside their studies. Full-time Access courses typically require around 15 hours per week of class time, plus 10-15 hours of independent study. Part-time Access courses are designed for students who work or have family responsibilities.
Many colleges offer flexible timetables, online learning options, and support for students with caring responsibilities.
