If you applied through UCAS but did not receive any offers — or you declined all the offers you got — you might think your chance for September 2026 is gone. It is not. UCAS Extra gives you a second window to apply for courses that still have places, and it runs for several months before Clearing even opens.

This guide explains exactly how UCAS Extra works in 2026, who qualifies, and how mature students can make the most of it.

What Is UCAS Extra?

UCAS Extra is a free service that runs from late February to early July each year. It allows applicants who have used all five UCAS choices without holding any offers to apply for additional courses — one at a time.

Think of it as a second round of UCAS applications. Instead of applying to up to five courses at once, you apply to one course at a time through Extra. If a university does not offer you a place, you can try another. You keep going until you find a course or until Extra closes in July, at which point Clearing takes over.

UCAS Extra vs. Clearing: What Is the Difference?

Many mature students confuse Extra with Clearing, but they are different processes with different timings and rules:

ClosesEarly July 202621 October 2026

Key point for mature students: If you did not apply through UCAS at all, you cannot use Extra — but you can wait for Clearing (from 5 July) and apply without a prior UCAS application.

When Does UCAS Extra Open and Close in 2026?

If you become eligible for Extra after February (for example, if you decline all your offers in March or April), you can start using Extra immediately. You do not need to wait for a specific date.

Who Can Use UCAS Extra?

You qualify for UCAS Extra if you meet all of these conditions:

If you have not used all five choices, you do not need Extra — you can simply add a new choice through the regular UCAS Hub if you have a vacancy remaining.

How UCAS Extra Works Step by Step

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Log into your UCAS Hub. If you are eligible for Extra, you will see a message and an "Add Extra Choice" button. If you do not see this, you are either not eligible yet or you still have live choices you can use.

Step 2: Search for available courses

Use the UCAS search tool and filter by "courses available in Extra." Not every course will have vacancies. Courses that appear in Extra are ones that universities still want to fill. Popular subjects like nursing, business, computing, and social sciences often have plenty of Extra places.

Step 3: Apply to one course

When you find a course you are interested in, click "Add Extra Choice" in UCAS Hub. You will not write a new personal statement — UCAS sends the same one you submitted with your original application. However, you can write a note to the university explaining why you are now applying through Extra.

Step 4: Wait for a decision

Universities have time to consider your application. They may:

If a university offers you a place and you accept it, your UCAS journey is complete — you are going to university. If they reject you or you decline their offer, you can apply to a different course through Extra.

Step 5: Repeat if needed

You can keep applying to one course at a time through Extra until you find a place or until Extra closes in July. There is no limit on how many Extra choices you can make, as long as you only hold one at a time.

Tips for Mature Students Using UCAS Extra

Contact universities before applying

Unlike a regular UCAS application, Extra gives you the chance to call universities before you apply. Find the course you are interested in, call the admissions team, and explain your situation. Ask if they would consider a mature applicant with your background. A quick phone call can save you from applying to a course that is unlikely to accept you and can also help you stand out as a motivated candidate.

Use your personal statement strategically

Your original personal statement is sent with every Extra application. If you are applying for a different subject than you originally chose, your statement may not be a perfect fit. Include a short note in the extra information section explaining why you are now interested in this different course and how your experience makes you a strong candidate.

Do not wait — start early

Extra runs for months, but the best courses go quickly. As soon as you become eligible, start searching and applying. Universities receive Extra applications on a rolling basis and fill places as they go.

Consider foundation years in Extra

Many foundation year programmes appear in UCAS Extra. If you are a mature student without recent qualifications, a foundation year can be an excellent route into a degree. Apply through Extra to a foundation year in your chosen subject area.

What Happens If Extra Does Not Work?

If you have not found a place by the time Extra closes in early July, do not worry. Clearing opens immediately and runs until October. Clearing works differently — you call universities directly rather than applying through UCAS Hub, and you can apply even if you did not submit a UCAS application earlier in the year.

Common Questions About UCAS Extra

Can I use Extra if I applied after the January deadline?

Yes, as long as your application was received and processed by UCAS, you can use Extra if you meet the eligibility conditions.

Does Extra cost anything?

No. UCAS Extra is completely free. You only pay the standard UCAS application fee when you first apply.

Can I change my personal statement for Extra?

No — your original personal statement is sent with each Extra application. However, you can add a brief note through UCAS Hub to explain your circumstances or why you are applying to a different course.

Can I apply to the same university through Extra?

Yes, as long as they have a course available in Extra and it is a different course from any you previously applied to at that university.

How many Extra choices can I make?

There is no limit. You can apply to one course at a time and keep trying until you find a place or Extra closes in July.
